"A demo version of the song "Speak With the Dead," the final track on Draw Down the Moon, the fourth full-length album by the band Foxing, released August 6th 2021. This version was shared to the Foxing Patreon on October 15th, 2024, with the following text:
Hey everyone,
We just got done playing in El Paso, Texas. I wanted to share an early demo of Speak With The Dead from our last record. This song changed a lot conceptually in the studio. Originally it was meant to be a super orchestral song. And we wanted to record a massive string section and get access to play a big pipe organ in a cathedral. All of that kind of fell through for what the final version was. So here, the strings and organ and stuff is all midi. So if you can imagine it as real recorded instruments, it may have been really sick.
In this version though, I really like the end. The guitar solo I recorded here is what was used in the final version too. It's very loose, to me it feels more emotive here. I had this end string section I wrote on loop and just jammed over it for hours. I had lost my grandfather who last told me to never stop playing music. As he was taking his last breaths I was playing piano and guitar for him. I was trying to put all of that emotion into the solo, imagining that the notes I was playing were trying to reach out to his spirit to communicate, wherever he is now. It means a lot to me and the notes ring truer than any words possibly could.
