CONGRESSIONAL HEARING IS SET ON ARMY AND NAVY LIQUOR AND VICE
Washington, D.C. Senator Theodore G. Bilbo (D.Miss) has announced an all-day Legislative Hearing on the protection of American armed forces from Liquor and Vice, to be held in the Caucus Room of the Senate Office Building on Capitol Hill, on Monday, June 22. The public is invited.
An agreed policy on official procedure was recently fixed upon by a Congressional group convened by Representative Joseph R. Bryson (D., S.C.) for pushing Sheppard Senate Bill 860 to early passage.
This is believed possible by reason of the rising tide of indignation from angry parents and other connections of the multitude of service men now being debauched by drunkenness and prostitution in and about army, navy, air, and marine establishments.
Members of both Senate and House will attend the hearings, as a guidance to legislative action.
Invitations to testify are now being sent by Senator Bilbo to many leaders, including General John J. Pershing, Col. Theodore Roosevelt, Henry Ford, John D. Rockefeller, Roger W. Babson, Winthrop Aldrich, Josephus Daniels, Surgeon General Parran, William Cardinal O'Connell, Rabbi Stephen S. Wise, Bishop Adna W. Leonard, and Bishop James E. Freemen.
Also to the head officials of the American Legion and other military organizations, A.F. of L., C.I.O., Federation of Women's Clubs, Parent-Teachers Association, Universities, churches, temperance, civic, Negro and other bodies.
"Having initiated this congressional movement, I have been asked to take charge of the honorary organization work for the impending Hearing," said at the Capitol Captain Edward Page Gaston, National Commander of the Patriot Guard of America, Inc., whose headquarters are at 1617 Rhode Island Avenue, N.W., Washington, D.C. (National 0084).
"Senator Bilbo, Representative Bryson and other legislative leaders have started what promises to be a mighty, patriotic movement here at the National Capital as a factor in building up both military efficiency and public morale to bring ultimate victory for our Nation in the present war. Details of this crusade will be sent gratis on application to me at the foregoing address," concluded Captain Gaston.
